Open Source Gateway4/30/2021
As someone who understands RF, that board gives me the willies.Which is why Viktor has developed an open source infrared gateway that can connect your dumb devices to the latest flash in the pan backend service with nothing more than a software update.
Though even modern smart TVs still include IR remotes, so theres nothing stopping you from using it with newer gear if you dont trust like the built-in implementation. While the receiver isnt strictly necessary, it does allow Viktor to rapidly implement new IR codes. He just points the existing remote at the board, hits a button, and the decoded command gets sent out over MQTT where he can easily snap it up. But if you wanted to just throw something together in a weekend, you should be able to get his firmware running with little more than a bare ESP and a random IR LED salvaged from an old remote. But dont be surprised if you get hooked on the concept and end up rolling your own home automation system. ![]() Open Source Gateway Tv Series AndIll just connect it to an olf pc anyway to watch moviestv series and do some streaming. ![]() But that requires hacker skills to remove the old screen, potentially solder on ribbon cable to reach the new panels pins). External BOSE 101s and driven by PCFetch box DVD or anything else that takes my fancy. That way the rest of us could make interfaces without all the stupidity. Just make sure to kill off any networking first, because the last thing you want is your TV hacking you. I went out of my way to buy a dumb TV, and further one that wasnt 4K, had to pay more even. Stupid. But doing the math from my couch I would barely be able to tell the difference from 720p to 1080p. They tend to be a little chunkier than their consumer counterparts, but theyll have well documented control protocols, and wont berate you into connecting them to the internet. Id recommend Planar theyre fantastic, and they have actual, knowledgeable human beings you can talk to. Also, their website doesnt make me want to binge drink everclear like Samsungs does. Both Planar and NEC are running IPS glass from LG but each has added their own image processing boards. I recommend either particularly if you are into vintage computing as they will take just about any video input signal. One thing I did on mine was I used a constant current source to drive the LED and then tuned the resistors on the source it to set the current to what my LED allowed. Dont know if this is the best way, but it seemed to work well. How will this work with home automation, or old devices without ir control. The wifi part can communicate with a home automation hub, and the IR part can talk to an old TV, or an Air Conditioner, or an X-Box 360.
